Heavy duty construction adhesive

The original tan cartridge and its two stronger siblings. Heavy Duty, Extreme Heavy Duty and Ultra Duty polyurethane bond the heaviest building materials, fill gaps, resist water and weather, and cure to a flexible bond that outlasts the project, interior or exterior.

Which heavy duty formula does the job call for

Heavy Duty construction adhesive (LN-903) is the multi-purpose, low-solvent, high-strength formula we put in more hands than any other. It bonds plywood, particleboard, OSB, foam board, drywall, tile board, treated lumber and brick veneer, bridges gaps up to 3/8 in., and a 28 oz cartridge covers about 88 linear feet with a 1/4 in. bead. It is waterproof and weatherproof after curing and certified by UL Environment to the GREENGUARD Gold standard. It is not recommended for flooring, ceramics, mirrors, granite, marble, plastic or vinyl; Fuze*It covers those.

Extreme Heavy Duty (LN-907) is the all-weather, all-season version: it guns and bonds in extreme heat and cold and delivers more than two times the holding strength of fasteners alone on a wide range of construction materials. It is the bead for decks, siding, framing and anything that has to hold through a Midwest winter and a Gulf summer.

Ultra Duty polyurethane (LN-950) is tougher and more durable than conventional construction adhesive, resists weather across a wide temperature range, and bonds lumber, concrete, tile board, cabinets, foam board, countertops and granite indoors and out. Not for ceiling tile. Pros buy all three in 2, 4, 6 and 12 packs when the job is a whole house.

Heavy duty adhesive on the job: tips from the bead

A heavy duty construction adhesive gets its name in three places: the power of the bond, how it fills a gap, and how it behaves when the weather is wrong. Liquid Nails Heavy Duty cures tough, the bead stays flexible, and it holds plywood, OSB, wood, drywall and brick veneer on interior and exterior applications. Cut the nozzle to the desired bead size, usually 1/4 in., apply to one surface, press within 10 minutes, and give it 24 hours. Full strength takes up to 7 days, and once cured it is waterproof and outdoor-ready, dry or wet weather.

A few tips from the test bench: wipe your hands and the nozzle before the drops cure, keep the nozzle capped between jobs, and remove a stray bead within the first hours with mineral spirits. A heavy-duty bond needs a few hours of grab time before it is loaded and 24 hours before fasteners come out; a bead on wet wood takes longer. If you recently opened a cartridge and the bead will not gun, the nozzle has cured; cut it back and the heavy-duty adhesive formula underneath is fine.

The tips that matter most: keep the cartridge warm so it guns smoothly, wipe wet squeeze-out with mineral spirits or water depending on the formula, and remove a cured drop with heat and a scraper. Heavy Duty is certified low VOC and GREENGUARD Gold, meets ASTM D3498 and ASTM C557 performance standards for construction adhesive, and is sold at hardware stores, building centers and lumber yards across the United States.

Liquid Nails heavy duty formulas side by side: Heavy Duty LN-903 for everyday framing, paneling and remodeling; Extreme LN-907 for the strongest heavy-duty bond and extreme temperatures; Ultra Duty LN-950 polyurethane for stone, concrete and countertops. All three are gap filling, durable and recommended for interior and exterior use.

Questions about heavy duty & extreme

How much weight can heavy duty construction adhesive hold?

Cured Heavy Duty reaches hundreds of pounds per square inch of shear strength on porous materials; Extreme Heavy Duty is more than two times stronger than fasteners alone. Strength depends on surface prep, bead coverage and cure time, so use fasteners or bracing while the bond cures and let it reach full strength before loading it.

Does heavy duty adhesive work in the cold?

Extreme Heavy Duty is formulated to gun and bond in extreme temperatures. Standard Heavy Duty should be applied between 40 and 100 degrees F; keep the cartridge warm in the truck and the bead will gun cleanly.

Can I use Heavy Duty on a mirror or tile?

No. Heavy Duty is not recommended for mirrors, ceramics, granite, marble, plastic or vinyl. Use Fuze*It all-surface adhesive for those materials.
